Working with synthetic resin floors in autumn
In autumn, processing conditions change rapidly. More rain, lower temperatures and higher humidity directly affect the application and curing of resin floors. With the right preparation, the quality, adhesion and appearance of the flooring system remain guaranteed.
A dry substrate remains the foundation
Rainy days don't just cause moisture outdoors. Indoors, too, the humidity can rise and moisture in the substrate can play a greater role. Therefore, the substrate must be clean, dry and dust-free prior to application. Also always check that there is no rising damp.
For many epoxy and PU systems, the basic principle is that the moisture content of the substrate must be below the prescribed limit. Measure this where necessary and do not take any risks if the substrate is not yet sufficiently dry.
Always measure temperature, humidity and dew point
A colder floor is not always visible, but it does affect the result. The temperature of the substrate must be within the prescribed application conditions and remain sufficiently above the dew point. This prevents condensation from forming on the floor.
Always measure the relative humidity, the air and substrate temperature, and the dew point prior to any application. This is not a check that is only necessary in rainy or humid weather: conditions on site can always vary. Then compare the measured values with the application conditions in the current product data sheet.
Condensation can disrupt adhesion and lead to dull or white patches in the finish. With epoxy products, amine blush can also occur under unfavourable conditions: a white residue on the coating.
High humidity calls for extra attention
In the autumn, the relative humidity is often high. This can extend the drying and curing times. During application and curing, ensure sufficient ventilation, without strong draughts across the floor. This allows moisture to be removed and gives the material time to cure properly.
Please note that the maximum permitted relative humidity varies by product. For many systems, this limit is around 80%, while some products require a lower maximum humidity.
Protect the workplace against rain and moisture
When working outdoors, in semi-open spaces or near open accesses, protection against rain is essential. Freshly applied material must not come into contact with rainwater during application and curing. This can cause foaming, a disturbed surface or adhesion problems, among other things.
Therefore, close off the workspace where possible and coordinate the schedule with the weather forecast. Also consider moisture entering through open doors, wet shoes, or equipment.
Adapt the schedule to the circumstances
Lower temperatures generally slow down the curing process. As a result, waiting times between coats can be longer and a floor can be subjected to light traffic or full service later. Plan for this extra time in advance so that subsequent steps are not carried out too early.
Additionally, store materials in accordance with the instructions and ensure that the material, substrate, and ambient temperatures fall within the specified limits. A well-prepared project prevents delays and limits the risk of remedial work.

Every primer, coating and casting compound has its own application conditions. Therefore, always check the current product data sheet before starting for the required temperature, maximum humidity, substrate conditions, pot life and drying times.
